Book Details:

To us, first responders are heroes. But for them, risking their lives is a normal, everyday thing.

Mudflap:
Born the baby of the family, Mudflap has always had something to prove to emerge out of the shadows of his older siblings. He spent eight years as a Special Ops elite sniper and is now a firefighter. But at his heart, he’s just a normal West Texas good old boy who loves his beer, women and football, until the Department of Defense calls him up to say they need his skills again.

Shanae:
Shanae is a first responder of a different sort. She’s a trauma nurse who works on a medical evacuation helicopter team. But while she lives a life full of adrenaline every day, it’s just a cover for her real life, where she hides in the shadows and is secret agent, Shadowfox for the Lubbock Foxtrot Team (LiFT). She’s living the kind of life that most people think exists only in movies and books.

Working for two different branches of the government, Mudflap and Shanae are in a race against time and the terrorists who threaten the very heart of West Texas life, football. They’re working toward the same goal, but find themselves in a confrontation against each other and the lies they’ve each had to hide behind. Can love win out in the end or will the cost be each other and their very lives?

First responders are heroes every day, but this story tells the tale of when they become even more and find love along the way. The key is for them to stay alive so that they can complete their mission and just maybe live happily ever after.

On an ordinary day, they save lives. On an extraordinary day, they save the country.

(All the proceeds from this novel will go to the Lubbock Red Cross.)

My Thoughts:

The Shadow of Mudflap is the first in the Foxtrot Team Series by Christi Snow and M.F. Mudflap, and it is based in Texas.  Texas is a place that is DEVOTED to their football!  I loved how this story revolved around the Texas Tech football team and I’m even HAPPIER to see that they did the football team justice.  You can tell that these two have a passion for the team and it showed in every detail that they wrote, including the teams that Texas Tech went up against.  I am a HUGE fan of Kansas State University and I was sooooo happy to see them featured in this book, they might not have been a huge part of the story…but damn it, they were in here! :-D

Now onto the story…

Mudflap is a true alpha hero. He is strong when he needs to be, sensitive when it’s called for and has some majorly good instincts!  He might be a fireman, but he isn’t an ordinary fireman…he had previously been a sniper for an elite special ops team where he received an honorable discharge from duty. Those skills are what gives him his great instincts and those skills are also what gets him called in on a special secretive mission as our story continues to unfold.

Shanae is the type of heroine that I LOVE to read about.  She is strong, assertive, smart, sexy and can damn well take care of herself.  She works as a secret agent for a branch of the government known as the Lubbock Foxtrot Team.  This team actually stays undercover by posing as first responders in the area, her job being an EMS worker.

I really enjoyed our two main characters, Mudflap and Shanae, these two had some amazing chemistry and it showed from the moment that they had laid eyes on each other!  I was extremely worried when their first physical encounter started up, but I’m happy it didn’t go to where it was leading.  I’m never a big fan of stories that start out with some major sexing between a pair that WE haven’t even gotten to know and this story didn’t do that to us. *Signs a breath of relief*     I loved learning about both of them, their history, and their pure talents in their jobs.

These authors are very clever and I loved how the story flowed.  We would get Mudflaps POV then Shanae’s and in between it all were these times called “Halftime Texting” in which we would see some fun, playful texting between our hero and heroine!  The fact that the book revolved around the football team was great, but all the little details and reminders of that was a blast!  I also enjoyed how the relationship between the two of them unfolded.  It started out with a lot of heat, but when they took a step back there was a lot of sweet, playful, flirtatious feelings going on.  The romance blossomed and it wasn’t one that I was confused about, it really made sense!

I also liked how Mudflap and Shanae had a little bit of a secret life going on behind the scenes, but with both of their training they figured it out pretty quick.  It was fun to see them come to the realization of what was going on and how they came together in a working relationship as well.  They were just perfect all around!

The suspense part of it was wonderful as well.  I was constantly on the edge of my seat wanting to know what was going on, if the events were related, how so and so fit into the big picture…or what if they didn’t?!  It was wonderful to see how the clues unfolded and how things were finally figured out in the end.  We still have a few questions unanswered, but HELLO, that’s why it’s a series, right?! :-P

Several of the side characters were fun to read about and I’m hoping to know more about them in the future!  Like Mudflap’s roommate Derek and the golf pro Lisa! :-D

Overall:

I haven’t read very many romantic suspense stories, but this one has me rethinking that decision and making me want to pick more of them up NOW!  It was a fun read, had some great suspense/mystery, had a wonderful romance between two great characters that you can really like and get to know AND it has some football action.  With tailgating season right around the corner (KSU’s first game is the 30th) this was a perfect time for this book to be released.  I’d highly suggest this book to anyone out there that enjoys a good Romantic Suspense.  I’d also like to say that even if you’re not a HUGE football fan, you can still really enjoy this read and appreciate it…now if you are a football fan, then you’ll definitely appreciate this read! :-)  At just under 50,000 words, this was a fast, fun read and one that I would like to pick up again…right now!  Also, keep in mind that all the proceeds for the book go to the Lubbock Red Cross, what better way to help out with a good cause and scratch your reading itch?! :-D
